Calcium is scientifically validated as an essential mineral for muscle function. It plays a critical role in the contraction and relaxation cycles of skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle tissues. When a nerve stimulates a muscle, calcium ions are released inside muscle cells, leading to interactions between actin and myosin filaments that produce contraction. Deficiency in calcium can result in muscle cramps, spasms, or even tetany, underscoring its importance.

Numerous studies demonstrate that adequate dietary calcium supports normal muscle physiology, especially in populations at risk for deficiency, such as older adults or those with low dietary intake. The Institute of Medicine and similar organizations recommend daily calcium intake to maintain both bone health and normal muscle function. However, in individuals with sufficient dietary calcium, supplementation above recommended levels does not appear to further enhance muscle strength or performance.

In summary, the scientific evidence strongly supports calcium's role in basic muscle function and preventing deficiency symptoms, though there is limited evidence for benefits of supplementation in well-nourished individuals beyond meeting daily requirements.
