Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is a type of ketone body produced during states of increased fat metabolism, such as fasting, prolonged exercise, or ketogenic diets. Its use in supporting the muscular system has been explored in scientific research, particularly in the context of exercise performance, muscle preservation, and recovery. Studies indicate that BHB supplementation can serve as an alternative energy substrate for skeletal muscle when glucose availability is low, potentially sparing muscle glycogen and reducing muscle protein breakdown during prolonged or intense exercise. Some research in both animals and humans suggests that exogenous BHB may reduce muscle wasting under catabolic conditions and improve muscle function in energy-deprived states.
However, the evidence is not uniformly strong. While some studies report improved endurance or delayed fatigue in athletes using BHB supplements, others find minimal or no benefit. The mechanisms proposed include reduced reliance on muscle protein for gluconeogenesis and enhanced mitochondrial efficiency. There is also some preliminary evidence suggesting BHB may have anti-inflammatory effects that could aid muscle recovery.
Despite these findings, most of the supportive data comes from small-scale studies or specific populations (e.g., elite athletes or individuals on ketogenic diets). More large-scale, long-term clinical trials are needed to confirm consistent benefits for muscle health and function in the general population. Thus, while there is some scientific basis for BHB's use in supporting the muscular system, the overall strength of evidence is moderate.
