Arginine malate is a compound consisting of the amino acid L-arginine and malic acid. L-arginine is known as a precursor to nitric oxide, a molecule that helps dilate blood vessels, thereby potentially improving blood flow and delivery of nutrients to muscles during exercise. Malic acid is involved in the Krebs cycle, contributing to energy production in cells. The combination is hypothesized to support muscle function by enhancing both blood flow and cellular energy. Several small-scale studies and reviews indicate that L-arginine supplementation may have modest effects on exercise performance, mainly in untrained or moderately trained individuals. However, results are mixed, with many studies either failing to show significant benefits or showing only marginal improvements in measures such as endurance, strength, or recovery. The combination with malate (as in arginine malate or the more common citrulline malate) is less well-studied, but some evidence suggests a synergistic effect in reducing muscle fatigue and improving exercise performance, though most data comes from citrulline malate rather than arginine malate specifically.
