Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

2, 17a-dimethyl-17b-hydroxy-5a-androstan-1-ene-3-one, also known as methyl-1-testosterone (M1T), is a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS). Its use to support the muscle system is primarily justified by scientific evidence, although it is not approved for medical use and carries significant health risks. M1T is structurally similar to testosterone and other anabolic steroids, and research has demonstrated its potent anabolic (muscle-building) and androgenic (masculinizing) effects. Animal and limited human studies indicate increased muscle mass and strength following administration of M1T and related compounds due to their ability to bind androgen receptors, enhance protein synthesis, and reduce muscle breakdown. Reports from the bodybuilding community and case studies document rapid gains in muscle size and performance during M1T cycles. However, these effects come with a risk of serious side effects, including liver toxicity, suppression of natural testosterone production, and other endocrine disturbances. M1T was marketed as a dietary supplement in the early 2000s before being classified as a controlled substance in many countries due to safety concerns. Thus, while there is scientific validation for its muscle-supporting properties, its use is associated with significant risks and is not recommended outside of supervised medical contexts, if at all.
