Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Beet nitrate, primarily found in beetroot juice and extracts, is scientifically recognized for its role in enhancing nitric oxide (NO) production in the body. Nitric oxide is a potent vasodilator, which improves blood flow and oxygen delivery to muscles during physical activity. Several clinical studies have demonstrated that dietary nitrate supplementation, including that from beetroot, can improve exercise performance, muscle oxygenation, and endurance in both athletes and older adults. For example, a systematic review published in Frontiers in Physiology (2018) concluded that beetroot supplementation can enhance muscle function and exercise performance, especially in populations with compromised muscle function.

However, direct evidence supporting the use of beet nitrate specifically for treating or improving "muscle tone"—which refers to the continuous and passive partial contraction of the muscles—is limited. Most research focuses on aspects like muscle strength, power output, and exercise tolerance rather than baseline muscle tone in clinical conditions associated with hypotonia (lack of muscle tone). Thus, while there is moderate scientific support for beet nitrate in improving muscle performance and function, its use for directly addressing lack of muscle tone is less well-established, warranting a moderate evidence rating.
