Evidence supporting the use of: European Mistletoe
For the health condition: Multiple Sclerosis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
European Mistletoe (Viscum album) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, especially in central Europe and within anthroposophic medicine, for a variety of conditions including cancer, hypertension, and neurological diseases like Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The rationale for its use in MS is largely based on its purported immunomodulatory properties and the belief that it can help regulate the immune system, which is central to MS pathology. However, scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of European Mistletoe specifically for MS is extremely limited. Most clinical research on mistletoe extracts has focused on cancer, not MS. Only a handful of small, low-quality studies and case reports have examined its use in MS, yielding inconclusive results. These studies often suffer from methodological flaws, small sample sizes, and lack of rigorous controls. Systematic reviews and reputable sources such as the Cochrane Library and MS societies note that there is insufficient evidence to recommend European Mistletoe for MS treatment. Its continued use is primarily based on tradition and anecdotal reports rather than robust scientific validation.
