Baicalein is a flavonoid extracted from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis (Chinese skullcap), a plant long used in traditional Chinese medicine. Recent preclinical studies have explored baicalein’s potential neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, which are relevant to Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system characterized by inflammation and demyelination.

Several in vitro and animal model studies suggest that baicalein can suppress neuroinflammation by inhibiting the activation of microglia and reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. In experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a widely used animal model for MS, baicalein administration has been shown to reduce disease severity and delay disease onset, likely through modulation of immune responses and oxidative stress.

However, clinical evidence in human MS patients is lacking. To date, there are no published randomized controlled trials or well-powered human studies evaluating baicalein as a treatment for MS. The evidence for its use is therefore limited to laboratory and animal data, which, while promising, do not yet justify clinical use.

In summary, scientific investigation into baicalein’s effects on MS is at an early, preclinical stage. While mechanistic and animal data support potential benefit, there is insufficient evidence to recommend baicalein for MS patients at this time.
