Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Undeca-2E, 7Z, 9E-trienoic acid isobutylamide is one of the principal alkamides found in the plant Echinacea angustifolia, and to a lesser extent in Echinacea purpurea. Echinacea has a long history of traditional use in North America, especially by Native American tribes, for supporting the immune system and addressing ailments related to the respiratory tract and mucus membranes, such as sore throats, coughs, and colds. The rationale for its use in supporting the mucus membranes stems from these historical applications. The alkamides, including undeca-2E,7Z,9E-trienoic acid isobutylamide, are thought to be among the constituents responsible for the plant's traditional actions, potentially due to their immunomodulatory and mild anti-inflammatory properties. However, while there is some emerging scientific evidence for the immunological effects of Echinacea extracts as a whole, there is limited and indirect scientific evidence specifically for this individual alkamide in relation to mucus membrane support. Most available data are based on the use of whole plant extracts rather than isolated compounds. As such, the justification for using undeca-2E,7Z,9E-trienoic acid isobutylamide specifically for mucus membrane support remains rooted primarily in traditional herbal practice rather than robust clinical validation.
