Chinese Mallow (Malva verticillata) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other herbal systems for supporting the health of the mucus membranes, particularly in the respiratory and digestive tracts. Traditionally, the leaves and seeds are used for their demulcent (soothing and coating) properties, which are thought to alleviate irritation in the throat, mouth, and gastrointestinal tract. The mucilage content in mallow is believed to help form a protective layer over mucous membranes, thus reducing inflammation and discomfort caused by dryness or irritation.
Historical texts and materia medica from TCM mention Chinese Mallow as beneficial for "clearing heat" and "moistening dryness," which often refers to soothing irritated mucosa. In Western herbalism, related species like Malva sylvestris have similar uses, further supporting its traditional application.
However, scientific studies directly validating these effects for Malva verticillata specifically are limited. Most research on mallow species focuses on their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, or mild laxative effects, inferred from their phytochemical content (e.g., mucilage, flavonoids).
