Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is commonly used to treat morning sickness (nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, NVP), and its use is supported by scientific evidence. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have assessed the efficacy of vitamin B6 in reducing the severity and frequency of NVP. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends vitamin B6 as a first-line therapy for mild to moderate NVP, often in combination with doxylamine (an antihistamine).

The mechanism by which vitamin B6 alleviates nausea is not fully understood, but it is thought to play a role in neurotransmitter synthesis and modulation, which may influence the vomiting center in the brain. A meta-analysis published in Obstetrics & Gynecology (2014) and other systematic reviews have shown that pyridoxine is more effective than placebo in reducing nausea symptoms, with minimal risk of adverse effects for both mother and fetus when used at recommended doses.

While vitamin B6 has a long tradition of use, its current endorsement is based primarily on scientific validation. The evidence base is not perfect—some studies are small or have methodological limitations—but overall the quality of evidence is moderate to strong, justifying a rating of 4 out of 5. It is important to note that very high doses of vitamin B6 should be avoided, as they may cause neuropathy, but routine therapeutic doses (typically 10-25 mg three times daily) are considered safe during pregnancy.
