Scientific interest in L-tryptophan as a supplement for mood support originated in the 1970s and 1980s, as researchers discovered its role in serotonin synthesis. Several clinical studies have examined L-tryptophan supplementation for mood-related symptoms, particularly depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and mood swings associated with hormonal fluctuations. Some randomized controlled trials have shown that L-tryptophan can have a mild to moderate effect on improving mood and reducing irritability, especially in individuals with low baseline serotonin levels.
