Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacteria
For the health condition: Mood Swings
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bifidobacteria, a genus of beneficial gut bacteria, has been investigated for its potential role in supporting mood and emotional health, including mood swings. Scientific interest in this area is based on the concept of the "gut-brain axis," which refers to the bidirectional communication between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. Some studies suggest that gut microbiota, including Bifidobacteria, may influence brain function and behavior by producing neuroactive compounds, modulating inflammation, and affecting the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin.
There is preliminary evidence from small clinical trials and animal studies indicating that supplementation with certain strains of Bifidobacteria (such as Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium breve) may improve symptoms of depression, anxiety, or stress, which are sometimes associated with mood swings. For instance, some human studies have shown reduced depressive symptoms or improved emotional processing with probiotic supplementation containing Bifidobacteria. However, these effects are modest, strain-specific, and not universally observed across all studies.
At present, evidence specifically supporting Bifidobacteria for treating or preventing mood swings is limited and not robust. Most research focuses on related aspects of mood rather than mood swings per se, and larger, high-quality clinical trials are needed. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and some early evidence, the overall support is weak (rated 2/5).
