Beta-caryophyllene is a natural bicyclic sesquiterpene found in many essential oils, such as clove, black pepper, and cannabis. Its use for mood swings is primarily justified by emerging scientific evidence rather than traditional use or folklore. Beta-caryophyllene acts as a selective agonist of the cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2), which is involved in modulating inflammation, pain, and certain aspects of emotional regulation.

Preclinical studies—primarily in animal models—have demonstrated that beta-caryophyllene can exert anxiolytic and antidepressant-like effects. For example, several studies have shown that administration of beta-caryophyllene reduces anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in rodents, likely through its action on the endocannabinoid system and anti-inflammatory pathways. These findings suggest a potential for beta-caryophyllene in supporting mood stability and possibly helping with mood swings, given the overlap between mood disorders and mood fluctuation.

However, clinical evidence in humans is currently very limited. While these preclinical results are promising and suggest a plausible mechanism of action, there are no large-scale, high-quality human trials directly evaluating beta-caryophyllene for mood swings. Thus, while the scientific rationale is present and preliminary data are supportive, the overall evidence strength remains low to moderate (rated as 2 out of 5). More research, particularly in humans, is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for this specific use.
