Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bacoside is a class of active compounds found in Bacopa monnieri, a traditional Ayurvedic herb. There is some scientific evidence suggesting that bacosides may influence mood, although the majority of research focuses on their cognitive-enhancing and neuroprotective effects rather than directly on mood swings. A handful of animal studies indicate possible anxiolytic and antidepressant-like properties, potentially due to modulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. Some small-scale human trials have explored the effects of Bacopa monnieri extracts (which contain bacosides) on anxiety and mood, with mixed but generally mild positive outcomes. However, these studies often assess general mood, anxiety, or stress rather than mood swings specifically, and the sample sizes are typically small with limitations in study design.
Meta-analyses and systematic reviews acknowledge the low-to-moderate quality of evidence for mood-related benefits, with a clear need for larger, well-controlled clinical trials. Traditional use of Bacopa monnieri in Ayurveda is mainly for memory, intellect, and general mental well-being, rather than specifically for mood swings. Overall, while bacoside-containing supplements are sometimes marketed for mood support, the current scientific evidence for their use in treating or supporting mood swings is preliminary and not robust.
