Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) has a long history of use in traditional Native American and herbal medicine. Historically, it has been used to support overall well-being, boost energy, and help the body adapt to stress. In traditional herbalism, ginsengs (including both American and Asian varieties) are sometimes considered "adaptogens," herbs believed to help the body cope with physical and emotional stress, which can, in turn, be related to mood stabilization. However, the specific use of American Ginseng for "mood swings" is not well-documented in traditional texts compared to its use for fatigue or general vitality.

On the scientific front, research on American Ginseng's effects on mood or mood swings is very limited. Some small studies suggest that American Ginseng may have modest benefits for cognitive function and may reduce mental fatigue, but robust clinical trials examining direct effects on mood swings, bipolar disorder, or emotional instability are lacking. There is some evidence for related species (like Asian ginseng) having mild anxiolytic or antidepressant effects, but these findings cannot be automatically applied to American Ginseng. Thus, while its use for mood swings is rooted in traditional beliefs about adaptogenic herbs, there is little scientific evidence to validate this specific application.
