Watermelon is sometimes discussed in the context of mitochondrial health due to its content of L-citrulline, a non-essential amino acid. L-citrulline is involved in the urea cycle and has been shown to increase levels of L-arginine and nitric oxide in the body, which can enhance blood flow and potentially improve the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to mitochondria. Additionally, watermelon is a good source of antioxidants such as vitamin C and lycopene, which may help mitigate oxidative stress—a known factor in mitochondrial dysfunction. Some scientific studies suggest that L-citrulline supplementation can improve exercise performance and muscle metabolism, indirectly supporting mitochondrial function.
