Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Ubiquinol is the reduced, active antioxidant form of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a compound naturally present in the body and essential for mitochondrial function. The mitochondria are often referred to as the "powerhouses" of the cell due to their role in producing ATP, the primary energy currency in biological systems. Ubiquinol serves two main mitochondrial roles: as an electron carrier in the electron transport chain and as an antioxidant protecting mitochondrial membranes from oxidative damage.

Several clinical and preclinical studies support the use of ubiquinol (and CoQ10 in general) in supporting mitochondrial function, particularly in conditions associated with mitochondrial dysfunction such as heart failure, neurodegenerative diseases, and aging. Compared to the oxidized form (ubiquinone), ubiquinol is better absorbed and more effective at raising blood levels in some individuals, especially older adults and those with certain health conditions.

Randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that CoQ10 supplementation can improve markers of mitochondrial function and reduce oxidative stress. For example, a 2016 meta-analysis in BioFactors found that CoQ10 supplementation improved endothelial function and reduced oxidative stress in humans. Similarly, clinical trials in patients with mitochondrial disorders have demonstrated benefits in muscle function and energy production.

While not all studies show uniform benefits and some questions remain about optimal dosing and formulation, the overall scientific evidence justifies the use of ubiquinol for mitochondrial support, especially in individuals with increased oxidative stress or mitochondrial compromise.
