Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Stenabolic, also known as SR9009, is a synthetic compound often categorized as a "Rev-Erb agonist." It is not a traditional supplement, nor has it been used historically in herbal medicine. Its use to support mitochondrial function is based on preclinical research, primarily in animal models and cell studies. Stenabolic's mechanism of action involves binding to the Rev-ErbA nuclear receptor, which is implicated in the regulation of circadian rhythm and metabolism. Activation of this receptor has been shown to increase mitochondrial biogenesis and enhance oxidative capacity in skeletal muscle in mice (Nature Medicine, 2012). These effects theoretically could support mitochondrial health and energy metabolism.

However, it is important to note that, as of mid-2024, there are no published human clinical trials investigating the safety, efficacy, or mitochondrial effects of Stenabolic/SR9009. Its use is restricted to laboratory settings, and it is not approved for human consumption. The evidence in animals is promising but very preliminary, and the translation to human health outcomes remains unknown. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some experimental validation in animal models, the overall strength of evidence for mitochondrial support in humans is weak.
