Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pterostilbene is a natural compound structurally related to resveratrol, found in blueberries and other plants. Its use to support mitochondrial health is based on emerging preclinical research, particularly in cell and animal models. Studies suggest pterostilbene may enhance mitochondrial function by upregulating genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis (such as PGC-1α) and by activating sirtuin pathways (notably SIRT1), which are important for energy metabolism and cellular longevity. Additionally, pterostilbene has demonstrated antioxidant properties, helping to reduce oxidative stress, a major factor in mitochondrial dysfunction.

However, evidence in humans is very limited. Most research to date has not directly measured mitochondrial function in people taking pterostilbene, and clinical trials are sparse. The majority of data comes from laboratory studies or animal experiments, which may not fully translate to human biology. While these findings are promising and suggest a plausible mechanism by which pterostilbene might support mitochondrial health, there is currently insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to strongly validate its use for this purpose in humans.

In summary, pterostilbene’s potential benefit for mitochondrial support is grounded in early scientific research, but more rigorous human studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety for this application.
