Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Potassium Beta-Hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is a ketone body that is produced naturally in the liver during periods of low carbohydrate intake, prolonged exercise, or fasting. Scientific studies suggest that BHB can serve as an alternative energy substrate for mitochondria, the energy-producing organelles within cells. When glucose availability is low, BHB can cross the blood-brain barrier and other cellular membranes, providing fuel for organs like the brain, heart, and skeletal muscle.

Research indicates that BHB supplementation may enhance mitochondrial efficiency and biogenesis, reduce oxidative stress, and improve cellular energy metabolism. Animal and cell studies show that BHB induces the expression of genes involved in mitochondrial function and may help stabilize mitochondrial membranes. In certain human studies, exogenous BHB supplementation has been associated with increased energy levels and improved cognitive performance, though robust clinical trials are still limited.

Despite promising preclinical data, the direct effects of BHB supplementation on mitochondrial health in humans need further validation. Most of the evidence comes from ketogenic diet studies rather than isolated BHB supplementation. However, the mechanistic plausibility and early experimental results provide a moderate level of scientific support for the use of Potassium Beta-Hydroxybutyrate to support mitochondrial function.
