Linoleic acid (LA) is an essential omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid found in many plant oils. Its role in mitochondrial function has been explored scientifically, though the evidence is modest and largely preclinical. LA is a critical component of cardiolipin, a phospholipid found almost exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Cardiolipin is vital for the structural integrity and optimal function of various mitochondrial enzymes involved in oxidative phosphorylation and energy production. Animal and in vitro studies have shown that adequate LA intake supports normal mitochondrial membrane composition and function. Deficiency of LA can impair mitochondrial bioenergetics and cellular respiration.

However, evidence directly linking dietary linoleic acid supplementation to improved mitochondrial function in humans is limited. Some research suggests that excessive LA intake may contribute to mitochondrial dysfunction through increased lipid peroxidation, especially in the context of oxidative stress or metabolic disease. Overall, while LA is biochemically essential for mitochondrial membrane structure, the clinical use of LA as a supplement specifically for “mitochondrial support” is not strongly supported by robust, high-quality human studies. Its role is better established in basic nutritional requirements than as a targeted therapy for mitochondrial health.
