L-glycine is a non-essential amino acid that plays several roles in cellular metabolism, including in mitochondrial function. Scientific studies indicate that glycine is a critical precursor for the synthesis of glutathione, a major intracellular antioxidant that helps protect mitochondria from oxidative stress. Additionally, glycine participates in the synthesis of heme, which is necessary for the function of cytochromes in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, and in the formation of creatine, which supports cellular energy metabolism.

Research in animal models and in vitro has shown that glycine supplementation can improve mitochondrial function by reducing oxidative damage and supporting the maintenance of mitochondrial membrane potential. Some studies have also demonstrated that glycine can ameliorate mitochondrial dysfunction in conditions such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and aging. However, while these findings are promising, direct evidence from human clinical trials specifically investigating glycine supplementation for mitochondrial health is limited.

Overall, there is a reasonable scientific basis for the idea that glycine supports mitochondrial function, but the evidence base is not yet robust, especially in humans. Further studies, particularly well-controlled clinical trials, are needed to clarify glycine’s direct effects on mitochondrial health in people.
