Glucose is a fundamental energy source for most cells in the body, and its role in supporting the mitochondria is well-established in scientific literature. The mitochondria are often referred to as the "powerhouses" of the cell, as they are responsible for generating adenosine triphosphate (ATP) through the process of cellular respiration. Glucose is the primary substrate for cellular respiration. During glycolysis, glucose is broken down in the cytoplasm to form pyruvate, which is then transported into the mitochondria. Inside the mitochondria, pyruvate undergoes further oxidation in the Krebs cycle (citric acid cycle), generating high-energy electron carriers (NADH and FADH2). These carriers then donate electrons to the mitochondrial electron transport chain, ultimately producing ATP. There is robust experimental and clinical evidence showing that glucose metabolism is essential for mitochondrial function and ATP production. Disruptions in glucose availability or in the enzymes that metabolize glucose can impair mitochondrial function and cellular energy levels. While the body can utilize other energy sources such as fatty acids and amino acids, glucose is especially important for tissues with high energy demands and limited mitochondrial capacity, such as the brain and red blood cells. In summary, the use of glucose to support mitochondrial function is strongly supported by scientific research, and its role in cellular metabolism is fundamental to biology.
