Geranylgeraniol is a naturally occurring isoprenoid found in various plants and is a key intermediate in the mevalonate pathway, which is crucial for the biosynthesis of several biomolecules including coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone), an essential component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Scientific interest in geranylgeraniol’s impact on mitochondrial function is mainly due to its role in protein prenylation and in supporting the synthesis of coenzyme Q10. Some research suggests that geranylgeraniol supplementation may help restore the production of coenzyme Q10, particularly in the context of statin therapy, which can deplete intermediates in the mevalonate pathway and thus impair mitochondrial energy production. Animal and in vitro studies have shown that geranylgeraniol can support mitochondrial function by modulating mitochondrial dynamics and biogenesis. However, direct clinical evidence in humans for its efficacy in supporting general mitochondrial health is limited, and most data are preclinical. Thus, while there is a plausible scientific rationale and some experimental support, robust human studies are lacking, and the overall evidence remains preliminary.
