Evidence supporting the use of: Fruit and vegetable blend (proprietary)
For the body system: Mitochondria
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Fruit and vegetable blends are commonly marketed as supplements to support mitochondrial health, and there is some scientific evidence underlying this use. Mitochondria are the "powerhouses" of the cell, responsible for generating most of a cell's energy through oxidative phosphorylation. Their function can be impaired by oxidative stress, which results from an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the body's ability to neutralize them with antioxidants.
Fruits and vegetables are rich in polyphenols, vitamins (such as vitamin C and E), and other antioxidants. Several studies have shown that diets high in fruits and vegetables are associated with improved mitochondrial function and reduced markers of oxidative stress (Nutrients. 2018). Specific compounds found in these foods, such as resveratrol, quercetin, and flavonoids, have demonstrated the ability to enhance mitochondrial biogenesis and protect mitochondria from oxidative damage in cell and animal models.
However, direct evidence from clinical trials using proprietary fruit and vegetable blends to support mitochondrial function in humans is limited. Most available data come from studies on whole diets or isolated phytochemicals rather than on the proprietary blends themselves. Therefore, while the rationale for their use is scientifically plausible and partially supported by preclinical data, the strength of evidence for efficacy in humans is moderate.
