Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Fisetin is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in various fruits and vegetables. Recent scientific research has investigated its potential for supporting mitochondrial health, primarily due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and senolytic properties. Preclinical studies (mostly in cell and animal models) suggest that fisetin can enhance mitochondrial function by reducing oxidative stress and promoting mitochondrial biogenesis. For example, studies in mice have demonstrated that fisetin can help clear senescent cells, which are known to impair mitochondrial function, and can upregulate the expression of PGC-1α, a key regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis.

Despite these promising findings, the bulk of evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies, with very limited data from human clinical trials assessing fisetin's direct effects on mitochondrial health. No large-scale, randomized controlled trials in humans have conclusively demonstrated that fisetin supplementation significantly improves mitochondrial function or related clinical outcomes. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting fisetin’s role in mitochondrial health, the evidence is currently limited and rated as moderate (2/5). Further well-designed human studies are needed before fisetin can be fully endorsed for this purpose.
