Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Acetyl-L-Carnitine Arginate (ALCAR Arginate) is a compound combining Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR) with arginine. Most research focuses on ALCAR, a naturally occurring amino acid derivative involved in mitochondrial energy metabolism. ALCAR facilitates the transport of fatty acids into mitochondria for beta-oxidation, thereby supporting ATP production. Several studies in both animals and humans have shown that ALCAR supplementation can improve mitochondrial function, especially in contexts of aging or neurodegeneration. For example, randomized controlled trials have reported that ALCAR can enhance mitochondrial bioenergetics and may improve cognitive function in elderly subjects, likely due to its effects on neuronal mitochondria. Arginine, meanwhile, is a precursor to nitric oxide, which can support blood flow and may indirectly impact mitochondrial health by improving cellular oxygen and nutrient delivery. However, direct studies on the ALCAR arginate compound are limited. Most scientific validation pertains to ALCAR alone, not specifically the arginate salt. In summary, there is moderate scientific evidence (rating 3/5) that Acetyl-L-Carnitine supports mitochondrial function, with less direct evidence specific to the arginate form. Its use for mitochondrial support is thus primarily justified by scientific literature on ALCAR, with emerging but limited data on the benefits of combining it with arginine.
