Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

7-KETO-DHEA (7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone) is a metabolite of the hormone DHEA and has gained attention for its potential effects on metabolism and mitochondrial function. Preclinical studies in animals suggest that 7-KETO-DHEA may increase thermogenesis and improve mitochondrial activity by enhancing the activity of certain metabolic enzymes, such as mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase and glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. These enzymes are involved in cellular energy production, suggesting a possible link to mitochondrial support. Additionally, early research indicates that 7-KETO-DHEA may help promote weight loss or prevent weight gain in humans, possibly due to increased metabolic rate, although the evidence is modest and mechanisms are not fully established.

However, direct clinical evidence supporting 7-KETO-DHEA specifically for the enhancement or protection of mitochondrial function in humans is limited. Most human studies have focused on weight management and metabolic rate rather than direct measures of mitochondrial health or function. Furthermore, authoritative reviews and clinical guidelines do not currently endorse 7-KETO-DHEA as a mitochondrial support supplement due to the lack of robust clinical trials. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary data suggesting a role in mitochondrial metabolism, the overall evidence remains weak, and more research is needed to clarify its effects and safety for this purpose.
