Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Tree Peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), including for conditions associated with pain such as headache and migraine. In TCM, Tree Peony root bark (known as Moutan Cortex) is believed to "clear heat," "cool the blood," and "move blood stasis," which are thought to underlie certain types of headaches, including migraines. While it is a common component of multi-herb formulas used for headache relief, there is limited direct scientific evidence specifically validating Tree Peony for migraine in modern clinical studies. The traditional use is well-documented in classical herbal texts and continues in contemporary TCM practice. Some pharmacological research indicates that compounds in Tree Peony have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties, which could theoretically contribute to headache relief. However, these findings are mostly based on in vitro or animal studies and do not directly address migraine in human clinical trials. Therefore, the justification for its use in migraine is primarily traditional, with a modest evidence rating reflecting its extensive historical use and plausible, but unproven, mechanisms of action.
