Evidence supporting the use of: Goldthread
For the health condition: Migraine
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Goldthread (Coptis chinensis), a plant used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is primarily recognized for its bitter compounds, particularly berberine. In TCM, Goldthread has been employed for conditions associated with "heat" and inflammation, such as digestive issues and infections. Its use for migraines specifically, however, is not well-documented in classical texts or modern herbal compendiums, but some traditional practitioners have used it to address "headache" symptoms, which may overlap with migraine presentations in modern terms. This use is based on the general anti-inflammatory and cooling properties attributed to Goldthread in TCM theory rather than targeted clinical evidence for migraines.
Scientific studies on Goldthread and its main constituent berberine have shown anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects in vitro and in animal models. However, there is a lack of clinical trials or robust mechanistic studies directly connecting Goldthread or berberine to migraine prevention or relief. Therefore, while there is some traditional rationale for its use in headaches, the evidence supporting its specific efficacy for migraines is weak and largely anecdotal, with a rating of 1 out of 5 for evidence strength.
