Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) is primarily used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for its purported cognitive-enhancing, anxiolytic, and adaptogenic properties. Its use in migraine is largely justified by traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. In Ayurveda, Brahmi is believed to balance the "Vata" and "Pitta" doshas, which are considered to play a role in migraine pathogenesis. Historical texts and Ayurvedic practitioners have recommended Brahmi either alone or as part of polyherbal formulations to support neurological health and reduce headache frequency and severity.

Scientifically, there are some preclinical studies suggesting that Brahmi may have neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, and that it may modulate neurotransmitters such as serotonin, which is implicated in migraine. However, there are currently no large-scale, well-controlled clinical trials directly assessing the efficacy of Brahmi in migraine prevention or treatment. The evidence that does exist comes from small studies, animal models, or extrapolation from its effects on stress and cognitive function. Thus, while Brahmi's use for migraine is grounded in traditional systems of medicine, scientific validation remains limited, and further research is needed to establish its efficacy and safety for this indication.
