Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Blepharis is a genus of plants in the family Acanthaceae, and some species (such as Blepharis edulis) are used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in parts of Africa and Asia. The use of Blepharis for treating or supporting migraine is primarily rooted in traditional practices rather than scientific validation. In ethnobotanical records, preparations of Blepharis have been employed for a variety of ailments, including headaches, but direct references to migraine are rare and often anecdotal. The traditional use may involve decoctions, infusions, or powders of the seeds, leaves, or roots, believed to have analgesic or anti-inflammatory properties that could help alleviate headache symptoms. However, there is a significant lack of clinical studies or pharmacological investigations specifically evaluating the efficacy of Blepharis species for migraine treatment. The available literature mostly documents general analgesic or anti-inflammatory effects in animal studies or in vitro experiments, if at all, and does not establish a clear mechanism or efficacy for migraines in humans. Therefore, while traditional use exists, the evidence is weak (rated 1/5), and there is no robust scientific support for its use in migraine management.
