Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Trans-pterostilbene, a natural stilbene compound structurally related to resveratrol, has attracted scientific interest for its potential benefits in supporting metabolic health, particularly in the context of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). MetS is characterized by a cluster of conditions including insulin resistance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and central obesity. Several preclinical animal studies and limited human research have explored pterostilbene’s effects on metabolic parameters. Notably, animal models have demonstrated that pterostilbene supplementation can improve insulin sensitivity, reduce fasting glucose, lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels, and exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects—mechanisms highly relevant to MetS.

Some early-phase human clinical trials suggest that pterostilbene supplementation may decrease blood pressure and improve lipid profiles, although results are mixed and sample sizes small. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2012 (Riche et al., 2012) found that pterostilbene significantly reduced blood pressure in adults with hypercholesterolemia, but effects on cholesterol and glucose were not consistently significant. Overall, the scientific evidence supporting pterostilbene’s use for MetS is promising but preliminary; larger, well-controlled human studies are needed to establish clear efficacy and safety profiles. Traditional use specifically for MetS is not documented, and its support is based on modern scientific exploration rather than historical precedent. Therefore, while pterostilbene is used to support MetS based on scientific rationale, the strength of evidence is currently modest.
