Evidence supporting the use of: Salmon Oil
For the health condition: Metabolic Syndrome
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Salmon oil is rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). There is a moderate level of scientific evidence supporting the use of omega-3 fatty acids from salmon oil in the management of components of metabolic syndrome, which includes central obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids can lower triglyceride levels and, to a lesser extent, may improve other lipid parameters. Some studies also suggest modest beneficial effects on blood pressure and inflammation. However, the evidence for significant improvements in insulin sensitivity or weight loss is less robust, and the overall effect on the full cluster of metabolic syndrome components is considered moderate.
Current clinical guidelines, such as those from the American Heart Association, recognize the triglyceride-lowering effect of omega-3 fatty acids but remain cautious about recommending them as a primary treatment for metabolic syndrome as a whole due to inconsistent outcomes in large-scale studies. Nonetheless, salmon oil is commonly used as a supplement for cardiovascular health and metabolic risk reduction, with its scientific validation largely pertaining to specific metabolic parameters rather than the entire syndrome.
