Some animal studies and limited human observational studies suggest that fermented soy products like red miso may positively influence components of metabolic syndrome. This is thought to be due to the presence of bioactive compounds produced during fermentation, such as isoflavones, peptides, and probiotics, which might help improve lipid profiles, reduce blood pressure, and enhance insulin sensitivity. For example, a few small-scale studies have reported improvements in blood pressure and cholesterol levels with regular miso consumption. However, rigorous clinical trials specifically evaluating red miso’s effects on metabolic syndrome as a whole are lacking, and results are sometimes confounded by high sodium content, which can have adverse cardiovascular effects in susceptible populations.
