Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, have been extensively studied for their effects on metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions including obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. There is a robust body of scientific evidence supporting their beneficial role in the management of metabolic syndrome, primarily due to their effects on lipid metabolism, inflammation, and insulin sensitivity.

Clinical trials and meta-analyses have shown that increasing dietary intake of omega-3 PUFAs, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), can reduce triglyceride levels, improve vascular function, and exert anti-inflammatory effects. Some evidence indicates modest improvements in blood pressure and insulin sensitivity, though effects on glucose control and body weight are less consistent. Omega-6 PUFAs, such as linoleic acid, may also help lower LDL cholesterol when replacing saturated fats.

Major guidelines, including those from the American Heart Association, recommend the inclusion of PUFAs in the diet to reduce cardiovascular risk, which overlaps with the goals of managing metabolic syndrome. However, while PUFAs are not a standalone treatment, their use as part of a comprehensive dietary and lifestyle approach is well supported.
