Polydextrose is a synthetic polymer of glucose widely used as a soluble dietary fiber in food products. Its use in supporting or managing metabolic syndrome is grounded primarily in scientific rather than traditional evidence. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated the metabolic effects of polydextrose supplementation. Evidence suggests that polydextrose may modestly improve some components of metabolic syndrome, particularly by attenuating postprandial blood glucose and insulin responses, likely due to its low glycemic index and capacity to increase satiety, which may contribute to weight management (Jenkins et al., 2011; EFSA, 2011). In addition, some studies have reported favorable effects on lipid metabolism, such as lowering total and LDL cholesterol (Raninen et al., 2011). Polydextrose also appears to have prebiotic effects, promoting beneficial changes in gut microbiota, which may indirectly influence metabolic health. However, while these results are promising, the magnitude of effect is generally modest, and the quality and duration of available studies vary. Most authorities, including the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), recognize polydextrose as a dietary fiber with potential health benefits, but do not endorse it as a standalone treatment for metabolic syndrome. In summary, scientific evidence supports the use of polydextrose as an adjunct in dietary strategies for metabolic syndrome, but further high-quality, long-term studies are needed to establish its clinical significance.
