Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Maslinic acid is a natural pentacyclic triterpene primarily found in olives and olive oil. Its potential role in supporting or treating metabolic syndrome has been investigated in preclinical studies. Research in animal models indicates that maslinic acid may improve several components of metabolic syndrome, including hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. For example, studies in rodents have shown that maslinic acid supplementation can reduce blood glucose levels, improve lipid profiles, and decrease markers of inflammation and oxidative stress. These effects are attributed to its modulation of pathways involved in glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, and inflammation (such as inhibition of NF-κB signaling).

However, clinical evidence in humans is limited. Only a small number of early-phase human studies or pilot trials have been conducted, and while some have reported beneficial effects on glucose metabolism or lipid parameters, the data are not yet robust or large-scale enough to make definitive claims. There is also a lack of long-term safety and efficacy data in humans. Thus, while the scientific rationale is grounded in promising preclinical findings, the current level of evidence is modest, and more rigorous clinical trials are needed to validate maslinic acid's efficacy for metabolic syndrome.
