Maqui berry (Aristotelia chilensis), a fruit native to Chile and Argentina, has garnered attention for its high content of anthocyanins and polyphenols, compounds known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The use of maqui berry to support or treat metabolic syndrome is based primarily on emerging scientific evidence rather than traditional medicinal use. Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that maqui berry extracts can improve parameters associated with metabolic syndrome, such as glucose tolerance, lipid profiles, and markers of oxidative stress and inflammation, in animal models. For example, studies have shown that supplementation with maqui berry extract can lower fasting blood glucose and improve insulin sensitivity in rodents fed a high-fat diet. Human clinical studies, while limited, provide some preliminary support. A small randomized controlled trial published in 2015 found that a standardized maqui berry extract improved postprandial glycemia in individuals with impaired glucose tolerance. Other studies have observed favorable effects on oxidative stress markers and lipid profiles, but these studies are generally small and short-term. Overall, while there is promising early evidence suggesting maqui berry may benefit metabolic syndrome components, the quality and quantity of clinical research are currently limited. Larger, well-designed human trials are required to confirm these effects and to determine optimal dosing and safety. Thus, the scientific evidence for maqui berry in the management of metabolic syndrome is rated as modest but growing.
