Khorasan wheat (Triticum turgidum ssp. turanicum), also marketed as "Kamut," has been studied in the context of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions including obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. There is some scientific evidence suggesting that consumption of Khorasan wheat products can have beneficial effects on some risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome. A few small randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in humans have compared diets containing Khorasan wheat products to those containing modern wheat. For example, a 2013 study by Sofi et al. (European Journal of Clinical Nutrition) found that subjects consuming Khorasan wheat products for 8 weeks had improved markers of oxidative stress, inflammation, and some metabolic parameters (such as total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol) compared to those consuming modern wheat. Another study from the same group reported beneficial effects on glucose and insulin levels in healthy individuals. However, these studies were relatively short-term, involved small sample sizes, and often included healthy or mildly at-risk individuals rather than patients with established metabolic syndrome. There is not yet strong evidence that Khorasan wheat consumption leads to meaningful clinical improvements in metabolic syndrome, nor is it established as a treatment. In summary, while there are preliminary human studies suggesting potential metabolic benefits, the overall level of evidence is moderate to low, and more research is required to confirm these findings and establish clinical relevance.
