Green algae, particularly species such as Chlorella and Spirulina (technically cyanobacteria but often grouped with green algae in supplements), have been investigated for their potential effects on components of Metabolic Syndrome, which includes obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. Several clinical trials and animal studies suggest that supplementation with green algae may have modest benefits in improving lipid profiles (e.g., lowering LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, raising HDL cholesterol), reducing blood pressure, and enhancing glycemic control.
For example, a 2014 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that Chlorella supplementation could lead to small but statistically significant reductions in total cholesterol and fasting blood glucose. Other small studies have shown that Spirulina may reduce triglycerides and improve markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in patients with Metabolic Syndrome or its components. Proposed mechanisms include the antioxidant content, effects on lipid metabolism, and possible modulation of immune response.
However, the overall quality of evidence is low to moderate: studies often have small sample sizes, short durations, and sometimes lack rigorous controls. There are few large-scale, long-term randomized trials. Thus, while there is some scientific basis for the use of green algae as a supportive adjunct in managing aspects of Metabolic Syndrome, the evidence is limited and does not support use as a primary intervention.
