Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) are prebiotic fibers that modulate the gut microbiota, and their potential role in supporting or treating metabolic syndrome has been the subject of emerging scientific investigation. Several animal studies and a limited number of human clinical trials have examined the effects of GOS supplementation on metabolic parameters, including insulin sensitivity, lipid profiles, and inflammation. Evidence suggests that GOS can increase beneficial gut bacteria such as Bifidobacteria, which may in turn influence metabolic health by reducing systemic inflammation and improving glucose metabolism.
A few randomized controlled trials in humans have shown modest improvements in biomarkers associated with metabolic syndrome, such as fasting glucose and cholesterol levels, after GOS supplementation. However, the quality and quantity of human data remain limited, and most studies are small and short-term. There is currently insufficient high-quality, long-term evidence to conclusively recommend GOS as a treatment for metabolic syndrome. The mechanism is biologically plausible, given the role of the gut microbiome in metabolic regulation, but more robust clinical research is needed.
