Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chromium nicotinate, a form of the essential trace mineral chromium combined with niacin, is sometimes used as a dietary supplement to support metabolic health, including components of Metabolic Syndrome (such as insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and obesity). The rationale for its use is based on the role of chromium in enhancing insulin action and improving glucose metabolism. Some clinical studies have investigated the effects of chromium supplementation (including forms like chromium picolinate and chromium nicotinate) on blood glucose control and lipid profiles in individuals with type 2 diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome.

However, the evidence is mixed and generally weak. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials have found only modest or no significant benefits of chromium supplementation for improving glycemic control or lipid parameters in people with Metabolic Syndrome or type 2 diabetes. The quality of the available studies varies, and many are small or methodologically limited. Chromium nicotinate has not been shown to be more effective than other forms of chromium. Major guidelines do not recommend chromium supplementation for Metabolic Syndrome due to insufficient evidence of benefit.

In summary, while there is a scientific rationale and some limited clinical data supporting the use of chromium (including chromium nicotinate) for Metabolic Syndrome, the overall evidence base is weak (rating: 2/5) and does not justify widespread clinical use. Further high-quality research is needed to clarify any potential benefits.
