Chromium dinicocysteinate is a form of the essential trace mineral chromium, bound to the amino acid cysteine and niacin. Chromium supplementation has been studied for its potential role in improving glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity, which are central aspects of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). Several small clinical trials and animal studies suggest that chromium, particularly in more bioavailable forms like dinicocysteinate, may help improve insulin resistance, lower fasting blood glucose, and have modest effects on lipid profiles. For example, a 2012 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Roussel et al.) found that chromium dinicocysteinate supplementation improved insulin resistance and reduced oxidative stress biomarkers in type 2 diabetic patients. However, the magnitude of effect was moderate and the study period was limited. Larger systematic reviews and meta-analyses evaluating chromium supplementation (various forms) for MetS-related outcomes report mixed results, with some showing minor improvements in glycemic control and others finding no significant benefit over placebo. There is insufficient large-scale, long-term evidence to conclusively support chromium dinicocysteinate as a primary treatment for MetS, and current medical guidelines do not endorse its routine use. Overall, while there is some scientific investigation and modest evidence for benefit, the support is limited and not robust.
