Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) is increasingly studied for its potential benefits in managing Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). Scientific interest centers on the berry’s rich polyphenol content, particularly anthocyanins and flavonoids, which possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Several randomized controlled trials and animal studies have investigated chokeberry extract supplementation in individuals with MetS or its components (obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance).

Clinical studies suggest that chokeberry supplementation can modestly improve lipid profiles (reducing total and LDL cholesterol), decrease blood pressure, and improve antioxidant status. Some trials have also reported improvements in markers of glucose metabolism. For instance, a 2010 study found that a 2-month chokeberry extract intervention in patients with MetS resulted in significant reductions in blood pressure, serum cholesterol, and inflammatory markers. The mechanisms proposed include inhibition of lipid peroxidation, improvement in endothelial function, and reduction of oxidative stress.

While the evidence is promising, it is not yet robust: studies are limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and heterogeneity in chokeberry preparations and dosages. No major safety concerns have been reported, but large-scale, long-term clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and establish optimal dosing. Nevertheless, the current body of scientific literature supports a moderate level of evidence for chokeberry’s use in supporting aspects of metabolic syndrome.
