Catechins, a group of polyphenolic compounds found abundantly in green tea and other plant sources, have been investigated for their potential benefits in metabolic syndrome (MetS), a cluster of conditions that includes obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Scientific studies, including randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses, suggest that catechins (especially epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG) may have modest beneficial effects on several MetS components. For example, some studies report reductions in body weight, body fat, and waist circumference with green tea catechin supplementation. Others have demonstrated improvements in lipid profiles (such as decreased LDL cholesterol and triglycerides), as well as enhanced insulin sensitivity and reduced blood pressure, although the magnitude of these effects is generally small and sometimes inconsistent across studies.

The proposed mechanisms involve catechins’ antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as their ability to modulate lipid and glucose metabolism. Despite these findings, not all clinical trials have shown significant improvements, and the quality of evidence varies, with some studies limited by small sample sizes or short durations. Overall, while the evidence is stronger than for many dietary supplements, it is not sufficient to recommend catechins as a standalone treatment for metabolic syndrome. They may be considered as part of a comprehensive lifestyle intervention. Major health authorities do not currently endorse catechin supplementation specifically for MetS treatment.
