Blue-green algae, particularly species such as Spirulina and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, have been studied for their potential benefits in managing components of metabolic syndrome, which includes obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance. Some scientific evidence suggests that supplementation with blue-green algae can have modest positive effects on certain metabolic syndrome parameters. For example, small clinical trials and animal studies have reported improvements in lipid profiles (such as reduced LDL cholesterol and increased HDL cholesterol), decreased fasting blood glucose, and reductions in markers of oxidative stress and inflammation.

A 2018 meta-analysis in the journal Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity found that Spirulina supplementation led to significant reductions in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and fasting blood glucose compared to placebo. However, the studies included in this analysis were generally small, of short duration, and sometimes lacked rigorous methodology. Mechanistically, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of blue-green algae are thought to underlie these effects, possibly through modulation of oxidative stress and improvement of insulin sensitivity.

Despite these promising findings, the overall quality and quantity of evidence remain limited. Larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm these observations and to establish optimal dosing and safety. Thus, while there is scientific rationale and some clinical support for the use of blue-green algae in metabolic syndrome, it should be considered an adjunct rather than a primary therapy.
