Ampelopsin (also known as dihydromyricetin or DHM) is a flavonoid compound found primarily in the Japanese raisin tree (Hovenia dulcis) and several species of Ampelopsis. There is emerging scientific evidence suggesting its potential benefit in managing metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions including insulin resistance, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and obesity. Preclinical studies, mostly in animal models and in vitro systems, have shown that ampelopsin may improve glucose metabolism, reduce lipid accumulation, and exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. For example, research published in peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Phytotherapy Research, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry) demonstrated that ampelopsin supplementation in mice fed a high-fat diet led to improvements in insulin sensitivity, reduced body weight gain, and decreased serum cholesterol and triglycerides. Mechanistically, these effects are thought to be mediated by modulation of pathways such as AMPK activation and reduction of oxidative stress.
However, clinical evidence in humans is limited to small pilot studies or is lacking altogether. There are no large-scale, rigorous clinical trials confirming its efficacy for metabolic syndrome in human populations. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and promising preclinical data, the overall quality and quantity of evidence are modest at present. Its use for metabolic syndrome is supported by early-stage scientific research rather than tradition or robust clinical validation.
