Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pulsatilla, derived from the Pasque flower (Pulsatilla pratensis or Pulsatilla nigricans), has a long history of use in traditional herbal and homeopathic medicine for various gynecological conditions, including scanty menstruation (oligomenorrhea). In historical European herbal medicine, Pulsatilla was considered a remedy for "female complaints," thought to support the regulation of menstrual flow and relieve associated symptoms such as cramps, mood swings, and delayed or irregular periods. Homeopathic texts especially highlight Pulsatilla as a key remedy for women with light, delayed, or changeable menstrual flow, often accompanied by emotional lability and mild temperament. The rationale in traditional systems is based on symptom similarity, individual constitution, and empirical observation, rather than on modern pharmacological understanding.

However, there is very little scientific evidence to support the efficacy of Pulsatilla for scant menstruation. No high-quality clinical trials or pharmacological studies have validated its use for this indication. Its continued use is primarily rooted in tradition and anecdotal reports, rather than in systematically gathered scientific data. As such, while Pulsatilla is commonly referenced in traditional and homeopathic literature for scanty menstruation, its effectiveness remains unproven by modern medical standards.
