Thyroid hormone (typically in the form of levothyroxine or desiccated thyroid extract) is scientifically validated for use in treating menstrual irregularities that result from hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone, is known to disrupt the normal menstrual cycle and can cause menorrhagia (heavy periods), oligomenorrhea (infrequent periods), or even amenorrhea (absence of periods). Multiple clinical studies and endocrinology guidelines recognize that correcting thyroid hormone deficiency with thyroid replacement therapy restores normal menstrual patterns in most affected individuals. For example, research published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology and Thyroid demonstrates that normalization of thyroid function in women with hypothyroidism leads to significant improvement or resolution of menstrual disturbances. The American Thyroid Association and the Endocrine Society also include menstrual irregularity as a recognized symptom of thyroid dysfunction and recommend thyroid hormone replacement as the standard of care. However, thyroid hormone is not indicated for menstrual irregularities unrelated to thyroid dysfunction. Therefore, the use of thyroid for menstrual irregularity is justified only in cases where hypothyroidism is the underlying cause, with strong scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness in this context.
